privacy and safety on the Internet.
how we use it, how we store it, and the steps we take to protect your privacy.
Note: Depending on the context, the term "CarMountain.com" is used below to refer
operators of the website.
CarMountain.com uses session cookies to maintain stateful information as users navigate from
page to page on our site. Session cookies allow us to recall information entered on a previous page
from the current page, thus creating a better user experience by not requiring users to re-enter the same
information over and over again as they move from page to page within our site.
For users that choose to create an account with CarMountain.com, session cookies are also used to
keep track of the logged in user's session.
Persistent cookies are used to keep track of the logged in user's session if a user selects the "remember me"
option during login. The "remember me" option may be set to "true" or "on" by default.
At any time CarMountain.com may decide to use persistent cookies to maintain stateful information
for longer periods of time than session cookies allow. Users should be aware of the
possibility of a change in persistent vs session cookie usage without further notification.
Session Cookies vs Persistent Cookies - Browsers are supposed to delete session
cookies whenever the browser is closed. Thus, session cookies are not supposed to be saved
permanently on a users computer although that's ultimately dependent upon the browser implementation.
Persistent cookies contain an expiration date that serves as
an indication to the browser that the website would like the browser to save the cookie on the
user's computer for a period of time up to the expiration date. Thus, by design, persistent cookies are
stored on a computer's hard drive.
CarMountain.com does NOT put personally identifying information such as email addresses, phone numbers,
or postal mailing addresses in cookies.
Most browsers allow users to opt out of using cookies. Browsers may also let users opt out
of persistent cookies while still allowing session cookies. CarMountain.com will not
function properly without session cookies enabled and functions best with all cookies enabled.
At any time CarMountain.com may not function properly without persistent cookies enabled.

- Tweet button
- Pinterest "Pin it" button
- Google g+ button
- LinkedIn share button
- Stripe payment processing service
- PayPal payment processing service

- twilio cloud based communications service
Note: The twilio service supports and utilizes cookies. However, CarMountain.com
users do not interact with the service directly. Instead, CarMountain.com servers
interact with the twilio service (cookies exist only between twilio and CarMountain.com servers).
Note: Third party cookies are associated with the third party's web servers and not with
CarMountain.com's web servers. If any of these third party services are utilized by
other websites, the information they collect on CarMountain.com may be utilized
on the other websites and vice-versa. Beyond utilizing these third party services on our website,
CarMountain.com has no control over how these third party services operate or how they make
use of the data they collect.
to store information on a user's computer. However, web storage is designed to be more secure,
faster, and provide more storage space than cookies. Also unlike cookies, web storage does NOT put
any data into the HTTP request header. Like cookies, the web storage API provides both session and
persistent (localStorage) capabilities.
At any time and without further notice CarMountain.com may make use of any or all aspects
of the web storage API. CarMountain.com does not put personally identifiable information in
such as email addresses and phone numbers in web storage.
Data Transmission Security
CarMountain.com relies on the industry
standard HTTPS protocol and its underlying SSL and/or TLS protocol to encrypt data transmission between the browser
and the server. There are indications that the U.S. National Security Agency is able to defeat this protocol
and gain access to SSL encrypted communication links. It is highly likely that security agencies from other
nations and some hacker groups have accomplished the same feat. Nonetheless, HTTPS is the only viable encryption
option available since it is readily supported by web browsers and web servers. HTTPS is a far better option
than the completely insecure HTTP protocol and HTTPS is likely to thwart more common, less sophisticated hacking
HTTPS and SSL only encrypt communication between the browser and the server. To be of any use
data must exist in unencrypted form on both the browser and the server. Thus, unencrypted data can still appear
in browser caches and web server logs even if the communication link is encrypted with HTTPS.
CarMountain.com reserves the right to enforce secure HTTPS connections on all pages under all conditions.
However, CarMountain.com may choose not enforce or require the use of HTTPS on all pages
or under all conditions. Users that choose to connect to CarMountain.com using the standard,
unencrypted, insecure HTTP protocol should be aware that all data exchanges between their browser and the
CarMountain.com web servers is readily visible to anyone monitoring any wifi or wired network between the
browser and web servers. Users that connect via the insecure HTTP protocol risk exposing their password,
email address, postal address, and any other data exchanged between the browser and web server. Insecure
connections are also vulnerable to session hijacking attacks where other users on the network can impersonate
a user and perform any action the impersonated user can perform including changing passwords and email
addresses and communicating with other users. Thus, a session hijacker can completely take over another user's
account. It may be impossible for CarMountain.com administrators to restore a hijacked account
to the original user.
CarMountain.com will always enforce encrypted HTTPS communication when credit card numbers are
provided for payment purposes, when usernames and passwords are entered during site login, and when users
register (signup) for an account on CarMountain.com.
When using a public computer, another person's computer, or sharing their own computer, users should be aware of the
browser's ability to save usernames and passwords and its data caching capabilities. Users should always use
caution when logging into sites from computers that that do not belong to them or from computers to which other
people have access.
Data Storage, Email Service, and Website Hosting
CarMountain.com uses the Google App Engine (GAE) web application service.
Google App Engine (GAE) is a cloud based web hosting service that provides a variety of backend services including web server, database,
email, and search services. All data collected by CarMountain.com is stored in GAE's high replication database (HRD)
including personally identifiable information such as email addresses and phone numbers.
CarMountain.com also makes use of GAE's search service to provide advanced and full text search capabilities. The
GAE search service utilizes it own indexes for storing and retrieving content.
CarMountain.com users should assume the site makes use of the full breadth of GAE services including but
not limited to Memcache, Email, Blobstore, SMS and Voice, XMPP, URL Fetch, Sockets, Logs, Prospective Search, Task Queues,
and all future GAE services as they become available. Any of the GAE services may have their own logs, indexes,
and/or data storage.
CarMountain.com does NOT have
control over the Google App Engine hardware and software infrastructure. We rely exclusively on the APIs made
publicly available for developer use. We have no control over servers, hard drives, logs, caches, and other
hardware and software technology used to implement the GAE service. Likewise, we have no
control over how the GAE service replicates and backs up data internally.
CarMountain.com utilizes Mailgun for email processing.
All emails sent to or from the CarMountain.com domain utilize Mailgun. Thus, a copy of all
emails sent to or from a CarMountain.com email address may be stored in Mailgun logs, caches,
and databases indefinitely. CarMountain.com additionally stores the content of all anonymous conversation
emails (between two users) to the GAE High Replication Database. At any time and without further notice
CarMountain.com may switch email service providers.
CarMountain.com stores all photographs in Google Cloud Storage (GCS). All photographs stored in
GCS are publicly accessible on the Internet. Photographs may also be stored in Google App Engine's Blobstore
service. Photographs sent to CarMountain.com via email may exist on Mailgun servers, in Google App
Engine's Email service, or other email caches and databases on the Internet. CarMountain.com has no control over
email caches and databases that exist outside the scope of GAE and Mailgun APIs.
All CarMountain.com data including photographs and personally identifiable information such as email addresses,
mailing addresses, and phone numbers may additionally be backed up to Amazon's S3 cloud storage service, Amazon's Glacier cloud storage service,
Google's Cloud Storage service, or other cloud storage or backup services. CarMountain.com relies
exclusively on public APIs made available for customer use by the cloud
storage and backup services. We have no control over servers, hard drives, logs, caches, or any of the
hardware and software technology used to implement these cloud storage services. Likewise, we have no
control over the data replication and backup procedures and policies of these cloud storage services.
All CarMountain.com data including photographs and personally identifiable information such as email
addresses, mailing addresses, and phone numbers
may be backed up to physical media located on or off the facilities of Clay Street Online LLC.
CarMountain.com users should assume this physical media is vulnerable to theft.
The ultimate privacy, security, and accessibility of data stored on any of the cloud storage services mentioned
above is beyond the control of CarMountain.com.
Data Collected and Its Use
CarMountain.com allows users to search, browse, and post ads of items and services for sale, lease, or
rent. Business and professional users may be permitted to post promotional, coupon, and special offer ads.
CarMountain.com allows users to communicate anonymously with each other via phone call, email, and through
a web page interface for the purpose of collecting additional information about items or services being offered,
to negotiate price, or to coordinate in-person meetings to view items for sale, lease, or rent.
The data we collect allows us to provide these core services.
CarMountain.com allows users to signup (or register) on the site. Users are required to register
in order to post ads on the site. In order to signup users must provide the following:
After signing up, users may be permitted to optionally provide:
- Mailing Address
- Phone Number(s)
Users are required to provide a phone number in order to utilize the Anonymous Phone Call System.
Business and professional users MUST additionally provide the following information at signup:
- Business Name
- Business ZIP code or Postal Code
- Business Website
- Business Phone Number

After being approved by CarMountain.com staff, business and professional users will also
be required to provide:
At any time and without further notice CarMountain.com may allow users to sign into the site
using their Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Microsoft, LinkedIn, or other third party login credentials.
CarMountain.com will request and require that these services provide the user's email address and
a display friendly nickname.
CarMountain.com will NEVER intentionally share, sell, or give away your email address,
postal mailing address, or phone number without your permission.
When users are signed into the site, CarMountain.com displays a "nickname" at the top
of most web pages. By default this nickname is derived from the first part of the user's email address
(part or all of the email preceding the "@" character). Users may be allowed to change this nickname
after successfully creating an account.
Google App Engine (GAE) provides a geo-IP feature where some IP addresses can be associated with an
approximate geographic location. The geo-IP information may include:
- Region (such as State or Province)
- Approximate Latitude and Longitude
CarMountain.com makes use of this geo-IP information in order
to present users with the most geographically relevant ads.
At any time and without further notice CarMountain.com may choose to make use of the more precise
GPS information available in cell phones and other mobile devices. Browsers generally require that users
give permission prior to a website being permitted to access this GPS information. Thus, users are ultimately
in control over which browser based applications have access to their GPS information.
CarMountain.com allows registered users to post ads on the site. Most ads require
an approximate geographic location such as a ZIP code, Postal Code, or City and State. This approximate
location information is used to provide geographic context for the ad so it can be matched to potential
buyers interested in items and services in that geographic location. Some ads, such as real estate ads, may
allow users to enter a complete geographic address including street and street number information. The street
and street number information is always optional. Users may choose instead to reveal their complete geographic
location only after communicating with and qualifying potential buyers through the CarMountain.com
anonymous communication system.
Users are not required to enter a phone number to place an ad. However, users are required to provide
a phone number in order to utilize the Anonymous Phone Call System. CarMountain.com does not
display the user's real phone number with an Ad. Instead, a public CarMountain.com telephone
number is displayed with the Ad and the Anonymous Phone Call System routes calls to the user's real
phone number, if any.
Most CarMountain.com ads require that users provide a "price" for
the item or service described by the ad. The price will be displayed publicly with the ad.
Users should double and triple check that they've entered the correct price.
Most CarMountain.com ads allow users to enter free form "description" text
and various other free form data fields associated with an ad.
The entirety of the free form "description" text and other free form data fields
will be shown publicly with the ad. Users should not place any information in any free form
data field that they do not want to be publicly accessible. Users should NOT place phone numbers,
email addresses, postal addresses, etc. in any free form data field.
Most CarMountain.com ads allow users to enter free form custom "features" for the ad.
The entirety of the custom "features" text will be shown publicly with the ad.
Users should not place any information in the custom "features" text that they do not want
to be publicly accessible.
CarMountain.com allows users to enter a variety of information related to each ad placed on the site.
The information collected may vary widely based on the ad type. Examples of such information may include:
- Date of Manufacture
All information collected for each ad will be publicly displayed with the ad. Some of these fields
may be free form text fields. Users should not place any information in these fields that they do not
want to be publicly accessible.
CarMountain.com is a visually oriented site. Most CarMountain.com ads require that at
least one photo is associated with the ad. All photos associated with an ad, before the ad goes
live on the site, will be shown publicly with the ad. Users should not associate photos with an ad if they
do not want the photos to be shown publicly.
After an ad goes live on the site, all photos associated with the live ad are treated as "security"
photos by default. Security photos, also known as "security and accountability photos", are not shown publicly
with the ad. Security photos are only shown to the buyer unless associated with a seller communication thread,
in which case the seller also has access to the photos. Security photos can be accessed by any user if the
photos' urls become known to the user. The CarMountain.com web page interface attempts to limit access
to security photos by only exposing the photos to appropriate buyers and sellers. However, either the buyer or
the seller or a third party with access to their system could make security photo urls accessible to others.
In short, there are no file level access controls on security photos.
person are permitted to take photographs of the item being sold/purchased. Buyers are additionally permitted
to take photographs of the seller and of the seller with the item being sold. Likewise, sellers are permitted
to take photos of the buyer and of the buyer with the item being purchased. These photographs are termed
"security and accountability photos" and are intended to capture the condition of the item
at the time of sale as well as to document the identity of the buyer and seller. These security photos are
designed to provide a level of accountability that other services may not provide. The CarMountain.com
and accountability purposes related to the transaction. However, CarMountain.com can not ultimately
photos may be used by malicious users for other purposes. Users that do not want their photograph taken for
security and accountability purposes should not use the site.
CarMountain.com provides a feature called the "Anonymous Messaging System" as part of its
"Anonymous Communication System". The "Anonymous Messaging System"
is intended to allow buyers and sellers to communicate anonymously through either
their own personal email accounts or through the CarMountain.com website (interchangeably).
CarMountain.com stores the content of these buyer and seller communications in its database.
When buyers and sellers use their personal email accounts to communicate anonymously, CarMountain.com
attempts to keep their personal email address private. To accomplish this, buyers and sellers don't email
each other directly. Instead, CarMountain.com acts as an intermediary receiving emails from buyers,
creating a new email, copying the content from the original email, and forwarding the new email to the seller
(and vice-versa for seller to buyer emails). Since CarMountain.com creates a new email in its role
as communications intermediary, none of the original email headers are forwarded to the recipient. This is
how CarMountain.com attempts to keep email communication anonymous. However, CarMountain.com
does copy and send the content of anonymous emails to the recipient. Thus, if there is any personally identifiable
information such as phone numbers, names, mailing addresses, or email addresses in the content of the email message,
then anonymity will be lost. Thus, users should be careful that any auto-inserted footers do not contain
any personally identifiable information. CarMountain.com makes no attempt to remove such
footers. Users should assume that all information in the subject,
content, and footer of the email will be passed to the recipient. Users can view the communication thread
via the CarMountain.com web interface to see the exact content that was passed to the recipient.
Users concerned about revealing personally identifiable information in this manner should use the website's
"Conversation" interface to communicate with other users instead of their personal email.
CarMountain.com uses the Mailgun email processing service to implement its anonymous email
communication system. Users should assume that a copy of all emails (and photo attachments) sent via
the anonymous email system are also stored in Mailgun logs, caches, and databases.
CarMountain.com provides an optional Anonymous Phone Call System that allows sellers to accept
phone calls from prospective buyers without publicly revealing the seller's real phone number to prospective buyers.
Instead a CarMountain.com phone number is made publicly available to prospective buyers. When
buyers call the CarMountain.com phone number and enter the seller's ad number, the buyer's call
is forwarded to the seller's real phone number. The intention is that both the buyer and the seller only ever
see the intermediate CarMountain.com phone number (although ultimately this anonymity can not be
guaranteed). Sellers also have the ability to call Buyers after a buyer initiates contact with a Seller.
Users should be aware of the following when using the Anonymous
Phone Call System:
- CarMountain.com stores metadata about all calls placed through the Anonymous
Phone Call System including but not limited to the following:
- The seller's phone number and caller ID information.
- The buyer's phone number and caller ID information.
- The date and time the call was initiated.
- The date and time the call was terminated.
- The call duration.
- While it is not our policy to routinely record the content of phone conversations,
CarMountain.com reserves the right to record phone conversations routinely or for any reason without
- CarMountain.com's Anonymous Phone Call System relies on third party telephony networks
that are outside our control. Thus, we can not ultimately guarantee the anonymity of calls placed
through the Anonymous Phone Call System. While we believe the Anonymous Phone Call System keeps
user phone numbers private, it is theoretically possible for the real buyer and seller phone numbers
to be revealed to the other party via phone bills or other means.
- CarMountain.com's Anonymous Phone Call System utilizes twilio's voice system.
Users should assume all phone call metadata including phone numbers are stored in twilios's
databases, caches, and other infrastructure. Since CarMountain.com reserves the right to
record phone conversations, any recorded conversations will also be stored in twilio's databases, caches,
and other infrastructure.
Most ads on CarMountain.com require payment. CarMountain.com uses third party payment
services to accept payment. Credit card numbers never reach our servers or any part of the Google App Engine
infrastructure. Thus, we do not store any credit
card numbers. Our third party card processors, Stripe and PayPal,
may store credit card numbers and other transaction related information on their servers. At any time and
without further notice CarMountain.com may switch, add, or drop payment processing services.
CarMountain.com receives transaction related information from our payment processors. This
information may include transaction numbers, email addresses, transaction status information etc.
CarMountain.com stores the entire transaction record as provided by its third party payment
processors. The transaction information allows us to reference the transaction later, issue refunds,
and perform other payment related tasks. The transaction information never includes credit card numbers.
Posting Ads on other Sites
Any ads posted on CarMountain.com may be automatically posted to other websites owned and operated by Clay Street Online LLC.
The purpose of posting ads on other relevant websites is to maximize exposure of the ad for the seller.
A primary purpose of the CarMountain.com website is to help connect sellers of an item or service
with prospective buyers. CarMountain.com provides an anonymous communication system to allow buyers
and sellers to communicate anonymously as long as feasible. Successful anonymous communication often results
in in-person meetings where buyers and sellers meet to inspect the item being offered and/or to conduct a sale
transaction. Buyers and sellers should review our Safety Guidelines concerning
the anonymous communication system and in-person meetings.
Login with Facebook
CarMountain.com allows users to login with their Facebook account. Logging in with Facebook
can save users considerable time since they don't have to verify their email, enter a captcha verification
code, etc. We ask for permission to access users' email addresses when they login with Facebook. User email addresses
are used on the backend of our Anonymous Email System and to provide status updates concerning Ads
placed by the user and other site related status updates. We do not share user email addresses with any
other party. We also utilize the first name from Facebook users' public profile. The first name is
shown to the user when they are logged into the site. We do not share the user's first name with
other site user's or anyone else.
Third Party Services
CarMountain.com makes use of the following third party services:
- Google App Engine (GAE)
Google App Engine is an all-in-one, full service, best-of-breed cloud based
web application hosting service. The list of services provided by GAE includes:
High Replication Database, Task Queues, Search Service, Log Service, Email, Web Server,
Blobstore, XMPP, URL Fetch, Sockets, Prospective Search, SMS and Voice, and more.
Users should assume that CarMountain.com makes use of all GAE services
both present and future.
- Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a robust website analysis tool. Google Analytics utilizes
cookies, IP addresses, browser user-agent strings, and other information to help
website operators understand how their website is being accessed and utilized.
All Google Analytics cookies are associated with Google Analytics servers and
not with the CarMountain.com website. However, the information gathered
by the use of these cookies is used by CarMountain.com to analyze its
website traffic. The statistical information collected by the Google Analytics system may
also be utilized by Google in an aggregate, anonymous fashion to provide multi-site
statistical analysis of web traffic, browser popularity, and other interesting,
potentially useful data.
- Google AdSense
Google AdSense is Google's world class advertising system that allows
website developers to place ads on their web pages. The AdSense service is a
godsend for website developers because all websites have operational costs
that must be funded somehow. AdSense provides an extremely effective platform
that allows websites to optimize their potential ad revenue and support their
operational costs. AdSense uses persistent cookies, the content of a site's web pages,
and other information to present ads that are
context appropriate for the web pages and potentially of high interest to
The persistent AdSense cookies are associated with Google's AdSense servers and
not with the CarMountain.com website. This means other websites that
display AdSense ads can share the same persistent AdSense cookie as CarMountain.com.
Thus, the AdSense advertising system can maintain information about all the websites
you visit that show AdSense ads. This can help the AdSense system display ads of high
interest to you but it is also a privacy issue to be aware of.
- Google Maps
CarMountain.com utilizes Google Maps for three primary purposes.
- The Google Maps API is used to lookup latitude and longitude coordinates of approximate
geographic locations given a city and state or a ZIP code or Postal Code. The lat and lon
coordinates are then used for search purposes or to associated an ad with an approximate
- The Google Maps API is used to lookup latitude and longitude coordinates of complete (exact)
mailing addresses. The lookup results may be used for search purposes, to associate an ad with a
complete address, or simply to verify that a user provided address is correct.
- Google maps are utilized for a variety of purposes including to show geographic map-based views
of search results, to show the exact or approximate location of a single ad, and for other
purposes related to providing a robust website experience.
Google maps may utilize its own persistent cookies and/or AdSense or any other cookies
associated with Google domains and servers.

initiate payment and save transaction details in its own database. Since the secure token
does NOT contain credit card information, the website developer does not have to worry
about all the certification and risks associated with handling credit card information
directly. Instead the developer can use the secure token to reference the credit card
information that is stored securely on the Stripe servers.
- PayPal Payment Service

When using PayPal with CarMountain.com, users are transferred to a secure PayPal server
to complete the transaction. Thus, CarMountain.com's servers never see the full credit card
or full transaction information. PayPal does provide CarMountain.com with a
transaction number and other information related to the transaction. CarMountain.com stores this
transaction number and other related transaction information in its database.
Mailgun is a developer friendly email service that allows developers to send,
receive, and track email with only modest effort. Mailgun supports all popular
web development languages and its infrastructure was designed from the ground
up to handle high volume traffic in a robust, highly available manner.
All email sent to or from the CarMountain.com domain, including anonymous communication
emails, use Mailgun. Users should assume that a copy of all emails sent to or from
